Going to black tie events when it is so cold that just walking across the street to the car is an utterly painful experience is just not ideal. And, they just don't make black tie gear for women that is warm. Men have it so easy. Tuxedos are worn with shirts, jackets, socks, and shoes that fully enclose your feet. Even my "winter" dress is open and I had to wear pantyhose (brrr) with open toe shoes (double brrr!). My friend is one the Board of Directors at the Chicago Lyric Opera and tonight was their big annual fundraiser. Tickets are normally a hefty $300/person for the cheap kind (yipes!) but given that my best friend is on the Board, she gave me my ticket for free. Because this entire city is an ice box, I really just wanted to stay home for the evening, because let me tell ya, nothing, and I mean, nothing, appealed to me less than having to go outside in a fancy dress. However, it was really a very great event. At one point, everyone went into the auditorium and the opera singers did a short performance for us--cabaret style. The best part was at the end all the opera singers came out in their Chicago Bears gear and the director of the opera, a very flamboyant Brit, instructed the audience to sing along with the opera singer to "Bear Down, Chicago Bears." He even put the lyrics to the song on the screen on top of the stage that normally shows the subtitles to the opera. It was classic!
And right now, I am going to go crank my heat, (I can’t wait for the next bill from People’s Gas) get under the covers, and dream of warm things. The sad thing is I looked at the five day and we have a long time to go before we get anywhere near the freezing point. We are so far below freezing its almost comical.
Night all, Go Bears!
